Panel tips: Promethean, Smart Board, ViewSonic

Most issues teachers hit are about browser full-screen, not the timer itself. Each brand hides the PC image slightly differently, but the fix is usually the same: use Chrome or Edge, maximize the browser window, then enter full-screen so the panel toolbar does not cover the countdown digits.

Promethean ActivPanel

Open Chrome from the ActivPanel's Android or Windows side (whichever your school uses). Bookmark MyClassScreen to the panel home screen if your tech coach allows it. Before class, load your saved board and tap full-screen. If the ActivPanel floating menu covers the timer, switch to "PC mode" full-screen or hide the overlay in panel settings. Elementary teachers: pin a two-minute transition preset — younger students need the same visual every day.

Smart Board (SMART MX / SMART Board series)

SMART boards often run SMART Notebook alongside the browser. Keep the timer in the browser tab rather than embedding a tiny gadget in Notebook — you get larger type and easier reset between periods. Middle school tip: run the timer beside the traffic light widget on one tab so you are not switching windows during group work.

ViewSonic ViewBoard and generic projectors

ViewBoards behave like large touch monitors — Chrome full-screen usually just works. On older ceiling projectors, bump the timer widget size until the back row can read it; contrast matters more than resolution. High school labs: label timers per station phase ("Setup 5:00", "Collect data 15:00") and save a board per lab day so setup takes one click.

Troubleshooting on classroom displays

Timer looks cut off at the bottom? Your panel may be overscanning the PC image. Check display settings on the computer connected to the board, or zoom the browser to 90% until the full widget fits. Timer not starting when you tap? Some panels register touch on the panel software layer first — click Start with the mouse or stylus once, then touch usually works for pause and reset.

Slow school Wi-Fi rarely affects the timer because counting happens in the browser after the page loads. Load your saved board before students arrive so you are not waiting on the splash screen during bell. Grade-band routines on the big screen

K–5: use short, labeled timers (3:00 cleanup, 5:00 silent read) with the progress bar visible. The smart board becomes the single source of truth — repeat the same durations until the class anticipates them. 6–8: combine timer with a noise meter during collaborative work; when the bar hits yellow, volume drops without your voice. 9–12: run section timers during AP-style practice and keep a clock widget in the corner for absolute time-of-day awareness during long blocks.

Coaches and elective teachers use the same setup: art room drying times, band sectionals, gym station rotations. Any space with a wall display benefits from a browser timer instead of a separate physical countdown clock that needs batteries and lives in a closet half the year.
